How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Automivo starts with one question: will this product work with your home and the system you have? For heating and cooling products, that means checking system type, wiring, room size, installation needs and ongoing upkeep.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the home and the system

A thermostat made for a conventional furnace may not work with a heat pump or line-voltage baseboard. A room air purifier or dehumidifier also needs to fit the space and the conditions where you plan to use it.

We check system compatibility, wiring and power needs, coverage area, dimensions, placement and drainage or filter requirements. When a product depends on a particular setup, we say what to check before buying.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the details makers list: supported heating and cooling stages, sensor options, control methods, airflow or capacity ratings, filter sizes and replacement parts.

Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note listed warranty terms, app or smart home requirements, and recurring costs such as filters or water panels.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like compatibility problems, unreliable connections, noisy fans, inaccurate sensors, difficult setup or replacement parts that are hard to find.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A thermostat that suits a heat pump may score lower in a guide for boiler controls, and a compact dehumidifier may not suit a damp basement.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell close models under similar names, so we check each model name, supported systems and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.

Our guides offer general product information, not HVAC installation or repair instructions for every home. Check the maker's requirements and contact a qualified HVAC professional when system compatibility, wiring or installation is unclear.
